Our History
Dr. Mauri Karger graduated from Texas A&M in 1977 with a Doctorate in Veterinary medicine; shortly after she founded a small practice in 1980. She pioneered veterinary medicine during a time when women were not the trend in the field.
After working for several years and taking patients home with her for overnight care, she once again challenged the standard of veterinary medicine. She opened one of the first 24-hour animal medical facilities in North Texas in 1987—providing first-rate service to patients and pet parents who needed loving care during hours other veterinarians were not open for business.
- Our present facility, located on Interstate 20 access road, opened in October 1997. The vision was a larger 24-hour state-of-the-art facility—specializing in emergency and critical services while maintaining routine services such as annual vaccinations, spays and neuters, and boarding.
- Veterinary Economics’ National Merit Hospital Design Award IN 1999.
- Certification from the American Animal Hospital Association (aka AAHA) by meeting requirements that meet over 900 criteria for outstanding medical and hospital achievements. We are celebrating our 30th year accreditation with AAHA in February.
- Accreditation for the Standard Track Residency program in Emergency and Critical Care by the ACVECC Board of Reagents in 1998.
- Partnered with Texas A&M College of veterinary medicine to create an elective in emergency medicine for veterinary students that allowed them to train at I-20 Animal Medical Center in emergency and critical care medicine.
- AAHA Certificate of Specialty Practice Accreditation for Emergency and Critical Care.
- I-20 Animal Medical Center takes pride in being a teaching hospital. We host a variety of training and informational programs such as, veterinary externship and internship programs, rotations in advanced emergency and critical care for students attending veterinary colleges across the nation.
- With over 30 years of 24-hour care, our family owned practice remains focused on providing the highest standard of care and medicine. We look forward to continue growing and becoming a safe place for patients and their pet parents.
